Disgusting.

At ASM they said that 1 microliter of hydrocarbon spilled into the ocean will cause the microorganisms there to consume 1 LITER of oxygen to break it down. Not good news.

So that's what, a 1,000,000,000 multiplication factor? UGH - there goes the Gulf Ecosystem.

Seriously, one of the things that hsould concern folks is the prograding of the Gulf Dead Zone which normally sets up right where the spill is this time of year.

If it's any comfort, it's slightly less (1,000,000) however given that there are almost 4 liters in a gallon, and that leak is pumping probably over a million gallons a day of hydrocarbons into the Gulf ... doesn't matter what factor we multiply it by. We're looking at the Gulf looking like the Dead Sea (in terms of ecology) before long.
